Introducing Greg

The new manager of the EIS will be Gregory Hudson:

"Hi all,

As Jonny has mentioned previously I will be taking over the reins of EIS from Monday. I've been a long time Erasure fan but my knowledge is not as extensive as Jonny's, so be kind to me over the next few weeks as I get to grips with everything here!

All the best!

Greg"

And goodbye from Jonny...

This is the last Erasure update I'll be sending out. I'm sure Greg will do a great job, and will bring a lot of enthusiasm and expertise to the EIS. I'm sure the EIS, and Erasure, will continue to go from strength to strength.

It's difficult to express my feelings as I say a reluctant goodbye to the Erasure Information Service. Looking back, there have been many great times, and many wonderful friendships forged over the past six, nearly seven, years. There's been a lot of good music, and some fabulous concerts, and two excellent Erasure albums [and 'Loveboat']. It has been fun and a pleasure, but like all good things, it has to come to an end.

Particular thanks should go to everyone at Mute [but particularly Janet & Shaun, Michael, Zillah, Elena, Daniel, Paul and Simmo], plus Susan, Squirt & Jo, Dom, Darren, Rob, Neil, Gary R, Mike, Ewan & Donna, Ian & Amanda, Karen W, Paul Tupperware, Christian, Jens, Evil James, Ian T, Jackie erasurette, David erasure.org, Sven, Donna and Katie. And, most of all, thanks to Vince, Andy and Paul.

I'm looking forward to supporting Erasure from the sidelines, and becoming one of the fans again. You'll probably still find me at concerts, so please say 'hi'.

Goodbye, and cheers,

Jonny

EIS

(Goodbye Jonny!, and thanks for your support and help with Erasurette :-) - Jackie)

London Astoria shows re-scheduled

Erasure's concerts at the London Astoria have been re-scheduled for the 5th and 6th of May [with tickets for the 21st being valid on the 5th, and those for the 22nd being valid on the 6th].

Applications for refunds and/or compensation should be addressed to the ticket vendors, as this is not the responsibility of the Erasure Information Service.

I can only re-state that I share the great disappointment and frustration of Erasure's fans that not only were the London shows postponed, but that the decision to postpone them was made so late in the day. I realise that many fans had gone to a great deal of personal expense to attend the shows and this is not a matter that I regard lightly.

'Make Me Smile [Come Up And See Me]' tracklisting confirmed

Currently scheduled for release on the 7th April, 'Make Me Smile [Come Up And See Me]' is the second single to be taken from Erasure's 'Other People's Songs' album. A cover of the Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel classic, the track has been reworked in Erasure's distinctively upbeat and infectious style.

The CD formats include two new acoustic tracks, 'Oh L'Amour' and 'Can't Help Falling In Love', recorded earlier in January at a session for New York's Sirius Satellite Radio.

Remixes are provided by 'Other People's Songs' producer Gareth Jones [the '37b' mixes of 'Walking In The Rain' and 'When Will I See You Again'], Dan Frampton [who has previously mixed The Honeyz, Atomic Kitten, Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton and engineered the magnificent Steps] and Manhattan Clique [the support on the current Erasure tour who provided an acclaimed mix of 'Solsbury Hill' on the previous single].

The DVD format includes the original, Vince Clarke-directed video for 'Solsbury Hill', which has never been screened in the UK.

Tracklisting:

CD1 [CD MUTE 292]

1: Make Me Smile [Come Up And See Me] [Edit]

2: Oh L'Amour [Acoustic]

3: Walking In The Rain [37b Mix]

CD2 [LCD MUTE 292]

1: Make Me Smile [Come Up And See Me] [Dan Frampton Radio Mix]

2: Make Me Smile [Come Up And See Me] [Manhattan Clique Extended Mix]

3: When Will I See You Again [37b Mix]

DVD [DVD MUTE 292]

1: Make Me Smile [Come Up And See Me]

2: Can't Help Falling In Love [Acoustic]

3: Solsbury Hill [video] - Directed by Vince Clarke.

Farewell competition

I'll be leaving the Erasure Information Service at the end of the week, and as a little flamboyant parting gesture I'm giving away a few rare Erasure odds and ends that I've discovered down the back of a filing cabinet. I have some copies of the 'Freedom' video [VHS, PAL only], some promotional CDs and quite of a lot of promotional 12"s, including some 'Erasure Club ERAS' 12" promos dating from way back in 1990... Oh, and I've just found one remaining 'An Evening With Erasure' CD, that can go in the 'prizes' pile too!

To enter, email competition@eisinfo.demon.co.uk with the subject line 'Competition', and include your full name and address details. You should also specify whether you want a video, a CD or a 12" [or if you're not fussy!]

And you should also include the answer to this simple question:

Jonny, departing Erasure Information Service Manager, once spent two cold and miserable nights in 1995 being an 'extra' in an Erasure video. The video was set in a fairground, and at several points during the [rather confusing] narrative Jonny can be spotted in the background, looking cold and miserable. And occasionally dancing, very badly.

----- Which Erasure video is this? -----

Closing date is 10 am GMT Thursday 27th February. Prizes will be allocated randomly amongst those who have given correct answers.

The vacancy of Manager of the Erasure Information Service has now been filled, by a very charming young chap called Greg Hudson who I am convinced will take the EIS from strength to strength. I'll introduce him properly later in the week, but I'm sure everyone will want to extend to him the same generosity, kindness and support that I have been so fortunate to receive.

London Shows - new dates

I've heard from someone who went to the Astoria tonight that the Astoria gigs have been rescheduled for Mon the 5th and Tue the 6th of May. That is still to be confirmed.

Get well soon guestbook

I've set up a guestbook so we can leave get well messages for Andy. Hopefully he will get to read them.

London Astoria shows CANCELLED!!

This is from Jonny at the EIS:-

I deeply regret to announce that unfortunately Andy Bell is still not well enough to do tonight's Erasure show at the London Astoria. The scheduled appearance at GAY and tomorrow's concert have also been cancelled.

Erasure's tour agents are currently working to have both dates rescheduled for later in the year; all tickets will be valid for any replacement concerts.

I am incredibly sorry about this; up until this afternoon everyone involved was determined that the shows would be going ahead, and I passed on that information this morning as it was an accurate description of the position at the time. Everyone was hopeful that Andy would have recovered sufficiently to perform the shows, and I had been given no reason to believe otherwise.

However, the decision to cancel the shows was only made a few minutes ago, and I am now letting you know as soon as I possibly can.

I realise that this news will come as a great disappointment to many people, including those who have travelled and gone to a great deal of personal expense in order to attend these shows. I can only say by way of apology that this decision was made with great reluctance, and that it would not have been made if there had been the slightest possibility that the shows could go ahead without the perfomances being severely compromised and without Andy's recovery being adversely affected.

I am very sorry to have to be the bearer of such unfortunate news.

GET WELL SOON ANDY!! xxxxx

I couldn't find a decent get well soon image, so I thought I'd use this one of a bunny in a hot air balloon as it reminds me a bit of Andy on the PE tour!.

Derby show cancelled

As those who attended last night's Erasure concert in York will be aware, Andy has recently developed bronchitis, and following medical advice, the decision has been made reluctantly to cancel tonight's show at the Derby Assembly Rooms.

The London Astoria shows are currently still planned to go ahead, and we are hopeful that the Derby concert will be re-scheduled for May.

The Other Tour

Erasure started their UK tour in Norwich on the 9th of February. There's an excellent review of the concert at BBC Norfolk's website (if you don't want to know too much about the concert though, don't read this!). If you do want to know the set list and more details then go to the PrivatEar 2 Yahoo Group and you'll be able to find out everything there! (You'll have to register first though).

New single and DVD

Erasure's new single Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me) will be released on the 7th of April in the UK on 2 CDs and DVD single. The release will feature a brand new track and also the video (directed by Vince) of Solsbury Hill, on the DVD!. This info is from a flyer that is being given out on the tour. Also mentioned in the flyer is a 'strictly limited live' DVD which will be available at the May shows and from the Mute Bank. It is thought this will be a recording of the EIS Christmas concert!. 'The Other Tour' competition results

Well, there was a staggering response - over 500 entries! - of which 25 were correct. Possibly the question was slightly more difficult than I had imagined.

Lots of interesting answers given, including 'Swan Lake', 'The Nutcracker Suite' and 'Fingal's Cave', none of which Erasure have ever recorded, plus Erasure compositions 'March On Down The Line', 'Who Needs Love Like That' and 'Sixty-Five Thousand'. I'm also afraid to say that 'Can't Help Falling In Love' dates from the 1960's, and not the 1700's as one person claimed, although admittedly it does feel like it sometimes. A little chronology [all dates are approximate within a couple of years - sources vary on some details]:

20th century:

Unsurprisingly almost all of the songs Erasure have covered originate from this century, including 'Everyday' and 'True Love Ways' by Buddy Holly, 'Ebb Tide' and 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'' by The Righteous Brothers, 'Supernature' by Ciccone, 'The Good, The Bad And The Ugly' by Ennio Morricone, 'River Deep, Mountain High' by Ike and Tina Turner, 'Over The Rainbow' by Judy Garland, 'Magic Moments' by Perry Como, 'Too Darn Hot' by Cole Porter, 'Solsbury Hill' by Peter Gabriel and 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! [A Man After Midnight]' by ABBA. Even though these are all, admittedly, very, very old songs, they are nowhere near the oldest that Erasure have covered.

19th century:

1876 - Edvard Grieg completes work on 'In The Hall Of The Mountain King' for his Peer Gynt Stuite No.1 Opus 46, the instrumental later to find worldwide fame as the b-side to 'It Doesn't Have To Be'. It also turns up in some Disney film, apparently.

1863 - John Freeman Young translates 'Stille Nacht' into English, making it 'Silent Night' and over a century later this carol turns up, performed rather badly by Erasure, on a Sire Records promotional LP.

1859 - Gounod adds lyrics to his Bach adaption to make 'Ave Maria', the b-side on the recently released remix CD of 'Solsbury Hill'.

1853 - Gounod adapts Bach's first prelude of the Well-Tempered Clavier for violin/voices. Well, he adds an extra bar, if you call that 'adaption'.

1827 - The music for 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' is published for the first time as "an ancient version, sung in the streets of London." 161 years later it turns up on Erasure's 'Crackers International II'.

1825 - Franz Schubert composes 'Ave Maria', but as this isn't the same 'Ave Maria' that Erasure will record in 2002 it's not relevant to this quiz.

1818 - Franz Xaver Gruber writes the melody for 'Stille Nacht'.

1816 - Father Jospeh Mohr writes the lyrics to 'Stille Nacht' in German.

18th century:

circa 1800 - The lyrics to 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' are printed in a London newspaper.

1722 - Johann Sebastian Bach knocks out the first prelude to the Well-Tempered Clavier, little realising that Vince Clarke would be using those exact same notes as an Erasure backing track almost three hundred years later.

and

circa 14th century:

An unknown author[s] writes and composes 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen'

So whether you're counting the composition date, the first publication date of the lyrics, or the date of the publication of the version of the song that Erasure covered, the oldest song Erasure have covered is 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' by at least a century.

And the judge's decision is final.

The winner [and his guest] will be invited to the soundcheck at the York Barbican on the 17th February, and will meet the band after the show for drinks.

And the winner is... Bruce Sharp

Exciting, rare and valuable runners-up prizes go to:

Bridget Gray

Karl Prescott

Lyndsey Tulip

M Cromarty

Michael Lyons

Nicki Spencer

Nigel Gooderham

Paul Hammett

Paul Tracy

Stephen Richardson

Erasure 'The Other Tour' competition

Are you going to one of the dates on the upcoming UK 'The Other Tour' in February? Would you like to be invited along to attend the soundcheck beforehand? Would you like to have a drink with Vince and Andy backstage after the show?

If the answer to these three questions is 'yes', then we have a competition for you. All you have to do is email <competition@eisinfo.demon.co.uk> with your name, address, phone number, details of which dates you will be attending, the subject line'competition', and the answer to this very easy Erasure question:

What is the oldest song [or piece of music] that Erasure have covered?

There will be one winner [and their guest], plus ten runners-up winning exciting, rare and valuable prizes. This competition is open only to those who are attending concerts in the UK in February and the prize does not include tickets to the concert - you must already have those. The winner and runners-up will be selected randomly from the correct entries. The judges' decision is, as always, final.

'Other People's Songs' out this week!!!

Erasure's great new album, 'Other People's Songs', is currently at 13 in the UK mid-week charts. If you haven't yet bought a copy, it would be great if you could manage to purchase a copy this week so that it enters the album chart at the highest possible position.

Radio stations and TV stations take a lot of notice of chart positions; getting a top 10 single led to Erasure being invited to appear on a 'Top Of The Pops 2' TV special, and if we can get this album also into the top10 it would help convince them that Erasure are well and truly back. There are certainly more than enough Erasure fans out there to achieve this - if everyone who has now bought 'Solsbury Hill' had done so in the first week of release, it would've got into the top 5!

Erasure on Capitol Gold

'Other People's Songs' will be Album Of The Week on the David Andrews show [1pm-4pm, weekdays] and David Jensen show [10pm-1am, Mon-Thur] for the week beginning 17th February. They will also be giving away copies of the album.

An interview and a session of two live songs will be broadcast on Mick Brown's show [10am-1pm] on the 6th Febuary.

Erasure Information Service job vacancy

After almost seven years in the role, I'll be leaving the Erasure Information Service at the end of February. It's been a lot of fun, and I've greatly enjoyed working with everyone at Mute and elsewhere, and have in particular appreciated the many friendships I have made with fans throughout the world. But now I've done pretty much everything I ever set out to do, including getting Erasure back in the top 10, so it's time to move on. Bow out on a high note.

If you'd like to be the new manager of the Erasure Information Service, we are now considering applications. You'll need some basic web design skills, some administrative experience, and you'll also need to be quite knowledgeable about Erasure. Ideally you would also be based in London, though this is not compulsory. The contract would be for an initial period of six months, working full-time. Applications, including CVs, should be sent to:

He played Solsbury Hill and Ebb Tide and said next week he would play Video Killed The Radio Star. If you missed the interview, you can hear it at Peter Young's website.

'IF WE HADN'T HAD THE DEVOTED SUPPORT OF OUR FANS I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO! CRY & CRY & CRY UNTIL I WAS ALL CRIED OUT, THEN I'D HAVE TO GO & JOIN THE CALIFORNIA RAISINS. SO THANKYOU, THANKYOU ALL VERY VERY MUCH, HUGS & KISSES TO ALL. MAYBE I'LL SHOW MY BUM ON TOUR - NOT THAT YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT ALREADY XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX'

Forthcoming Erasure single

The second single to be released from 'Other People's Songs' will be 'Come Up And See Me [Make Me Smile]', provisionally scheduled for April 2003.

Top Of The Pops 2 competition results

The winners are: William Botton, Peter Corrall, Paul Keen, Sandie Woodward, James McWilliam, Beverley Gibbs, Stuart Farina, Brian Reid.

Tickets will go in the post later this afternoon - if any of the above people can't make it to BBC TV Centre on Friday, please let me know before 4.30pm GMT.

As far as I can ascertain - having checked with Manhattan Clique - the mixes and tracks that are definitely sampled in the 'Manhattan Clique mix' of 'Solsbury Hill' are: Supernature - William Orbit mix, Victim of Love - Extended mix, Drama - Act 2 mix, Sometimes and Runaround on the Underground and possibly there is a bit of 'Snappy' or 'Vitamin C' in there somewhere [everyone who put these was given the benefit of the doubt!]. People who gave all the correct answers and also included some other tracks were also given the benefit of the doubt and included in the draw, except for the person who just sent me a list of every single Erasure track [nice try!].

I have 8 pairs of audience tickets to give away for the forthcoming studio recording of the 'Top Of The Pops 2' special, this Friday 24th January.

To win two tickets, all you need to do is email me at <jonny@eisinfo.demon.co.uk> with the subject line 'Competition', your name, your postal address and the answer to the following question: - "The 'Manhattan Clique mix' of 'Solsbury Hill' features samples of several old Erasure remixes and songs. What are they?"

In the event of not enough people giving the correct answers, tickets will be allocated to those who have made the closest guesses.

The closing date is tomorrow, 21st January, at midday, GMT. Winners will be notified immediately and the tickets will be put in the post that afternoon, first class.

If you only need one ticket, please let me know in your competition application and the spare will be allocated to another winner.

Important things to note: The recording will take place at BBC TV Centre in north-west London, and you need to be able to get there no later than 7pm on Friday 24th January. 'Solsbury Hill' chart placing

Despite being deleted, and despite shops being unable to re-order copies, Erasure's new single 'Solsbury Hill' has managed to chart for a second week at 25. This is based purely on sales of remaining copies of the CD and DVD, and is yet another staggeringly good achievement for the single.

This week's chart position

Erasure are still in the UK Top 40 this week at number 25. This is very good, when you consider it was a one week only release (which means once the record shops run out of stock, they can't order any more after the first week). Looks like they stocked up last weekend!. And I'm sure Erasure's last few singles have fallen down the charts more quickly than this one. Well done Andy and Vince!.

Erasure on last week's Top Of The Pops

Erasure perfomed on TOTP last Friday.. They had to miss a verse out as they don't allow too long for each act, but it was a great performace. If you aren't in the UK or missed it, you can see the whole thing by going to Peter Young's site.

After the show, they did a webchat on the TOTP site... don't worry if you missed it as TOTP have said they will be putting a transcript on their site next week. It was very good (once I worked out you had to press 'play' on the Real Player to hear and see A+V!), but I didn't get a question answered, (although I only asked two, and they probably weren't very good!). But it was much better than the last live chat they did on a German site, where I had to be called 'Kiki'.. don't ask!.

Watch the Solsbury Hill video

You can watch the whole Solsbury Hill video (the new one recorded at the EIS Christmas Concert) at German site Viva TV. You need a Real Audio player (which you can download for free here). You can also watch the original Oh L'amour video here too! (not the version on the Pop! video)

Gareth Jones' site

There's some new 'session pics' of Andy and Vince (topless!) on producer Gareth Jones' site, plus some pics of Vince's cooking!. Check them out here. Thanks to Jens for letting me know. Some of these pics look like the ones on the EIS site that are in the album inlay.

Erasure on Top Of The Pops

In addition, Erasure will be taking part in a live web chat on the BBC's 'Top Of The Pops' website immediately after the programme, from 8.00pm GMT. The URL for the webchat is: www.bbc.co.uk/communicate/totp/1042481940Erasurelive.shtml

(After the Erasure webchat, they'll be a chat at the erasurette chatroom (Erasure won't be at this one though, unfortunately!) - please come along if you can!. Just click on chat on the main page - Jackie)

'The Other Tour' venue change

Instead of the show in San Diego on the 19th March, Erasure will be playing at The Joint, Las Vegas. The on-sale date for this show is still To Be Confirmed.

Friday, March 7 New York Beacon Theater [on sale 25th Jan]

Monday, March 10 Chicago Chicago Theatre [on sale 25th Jan]

Thursday, March 13 Dallas Bronco Bowl Theatre [on sale 1st Feb]

Friday, March 14 Houston Numbers [on sale 25th Jan]

Monday, March 17 Los Angeles Mayan Theatre [on sale date To Be Confirmed]

Wednesday, March 19 Las Vegas The Joint [on sale date To Be Confirmed] *** instead of San Diego show ***

Friday, March 21 San Francisco Bill Graham Civic Auditorium [on sale 2nd Feb]

Can I just take this opportunity to thank everyone who responded to my message asking not to be emailed with requests for Erasure to play in various cities/states/countries with requests for Erasure to play in various cities/states/countries. However, I'm afraid I can't provide specific reasons why Erasure are not playing in certain cities/states/countries. It's not because they're snubbing anyone, it's just a question of what dates and venues were logistically possible when the tour was planned.

Erasure UK chart success

The new single by Erasure 'Solsbury Hill', entered the UK chart at number 10. This is an utterly fabulous result; their highest-charting single for almost 9 years, since 'Run To The Sun'. Mute Records would like to pass on their grateful thanks to all Erasure fans for making this single such a tremendous success. I would also like to personally thank everyone who bought the single on behalf of the Erasure Information Service.

This single has done much better than anyone had ever expected, for one reason only - the dedication and loyalty of Erasure's fans.

The success of 'Solsbury Hill' means that I can now confirm there will definitely be a second single taken from 'Other People's Songs', released in the spring.

'Solsbury Hill' is also number 2 on the UK indie charts. Please note that some record shops will still have some copies of the CD on sale this week; however, when remaining stocks have gone the shops will not be able to re-order any more copies, as the single has now been deleted.

The spectacular new promotional video for 'Solsbury Hill', recorded at the Christmas Concert last year, is now being made available to UK music TV stations. The old promotional video, directed by Vince Clarke, is being made available to stations in North America.

New interview

There's a new interview with Erasure at boyz.co.uk. Thanks to Sabine!.

Buy Vince's house!

Thanks to Peter for scanning these pics and typing out the article below, taken from today's Daily Express in the 'Homes' section!.

The buzz word in modern housing these days is 'technology', but when you get down to the nitty-gritty, what that really means is a lot of dimmer switches, remote control gizmos and plasma screen TVs. The houses themselves look pretty much as they've always looked: brick-built rectangles with pitched roofs and square windows. And although there's nothing wrong with tradition, isn't it about time we produced something to live in that looked a little more futuristic? Or have I seen too many Star Trek adventures, lately?

Aside from a few glassy urban tower blocks and a lot of stainless steel, Britain has never been very adventurous when it comes to space-age homes. But as the 21st century progresses, we are seeing a generation of pioneering housing concepts, ranging from ready-made mobile homes to semi-subterranean 'Earthships' (a recycled home made of old tyres and rammed earth) . Plus, we do have a legacy of curious experimental houses dating from the latter half of the last century.

One experimental house that would suit the serious techy (or, indeed, Trekky) is this cylindrical property, pictured above. Called Ammonite, it looks as if it should have an Enterprise-style control room with lots of buttons and flashing lights. And it would be easy to imagine that it had an engine and could slowly lift off into space.

Built 11 years ago by Vince Clarke, one half of the Eighties' pop band Erasure ('80s?, hmph, we'll see about that! ;) - J), the house sits in its own five acres of Surrey, 20 miles outside London. As the name suggests, it's a spiralling shell of steel and glass, fitted with a zoned heating system, a glass staircase, an all-singing, all-dancing circular kitchen, a hi-tech pool, left, and a Trekky-style electronic sliding front door. A pair of vaguely alien pods (or concrete domes) in the garden house Vince's recording studio (although the equipment is excluded from the sale). And loads of open-plan space, I am told, makes Ammonite, a "fantastic party house". Fancy dress parties, I bet.

Contact: Ammonite is for sale at £2.5 million through Knight Frank

We have been investigating the situation regarding some shops not having copies of the single in stock. MVC and Woolworths are not carrying the single unfortunately, and there have been short delays with getting stock to Our Price and amazon.co.uk which should now be rectified. Many shops that sold out of their stock at the beginning of this week have re-ordered the single, so if you haven't got the CDs yet, it is worth checking for the shops for them again over the next two days.

If you still can't find it in your local record shop, it can be ordered online from: www.amazon.co.uk The sales will still count towards the UK charts.

The single is currently doing very well and everyone at Mute is very excited. If you've already bought it, then may I offer our grateful thanks, and I hope enjoy the marvellous remixes and b-sides. This has proved one of the most popular Erasure releases for a long, long time.

The release is likely to become something of a collectors' item in the very near future - the CD singles are already selling for more than their sale price on ebay - so if you haven't yet picked up a copy, I recommend you do so before it's too late. And if you have already picked up a copy, why not pick up another one as an investment!

Interview in Daily Express

There was a short interview in today's Daily Express (UK newspaper) with Andy and Vince. I have added it to the interviews section here. There wasn't an interview in today's Daily Telegraph (as mentioned below), it was in yesterday's paper, but I've found it online and added it to my interviews section too, as it was quite a hassle having to register at the site.
